Scottish Ballet @ Tramway

Refurbishment of existing theatre building and construction of new extension to create flagship dance studios / rehearsal facilities in amongst operational theatre / arts venue.

 

The project involved the demolition of some existing bays at the Tramway, grouting of two existing coal seams at depth below ground level, piling to support new building and construction of the new wing of the buildings, including alterations & refurbishment to other areas of the Tramway Theatre.

Key Constraints

With such major extension works there were several constraints involved in the project which were integrated into the design and planning phases to reduce the risk involved during the construction phase:


  • Working in close proximity to a railway and tunnel below site level

  • Managing works around a live venue

  • Interface of existing, historical building with new construction materials

  • Pursuit of award winning design features balanced with maintenance

  • Adjacent historical church in close proximity to new works

  • Sensitivity to surrounding area

  • Ground stability issues

  • Significant existing services infrastructure

  • Limited space available for compound facilities & storage of materials

  • Tight programme for dance company new season start
